Meeting

Description

Our meeting next month will be held on Thursday, March 15, at Misty’s Steakhouse & Lounge in Lincoln, NE.   Our speaker will be John Brown, Director of Business Development, Industrial Accessories Company, who will discuss “Engineering Silica out of the Foundry”. He gave this same presentation to our KC group back in October.

John joined a large industrial filtration company in the late 90’s where he grew through the ranks to help lead its baghouse OEM division as well as its aftermarket sales. There he was able to gain experience in many different industries and customer channels. Growing on that knowledge John then led the sales for a company that supplied particulate monitors and Gas CEM’s packages in North and South America. His work has taken him to hundreds of manufacturing sites around the world, servicing customers in cement, steel, foundries, power, chemical, food, and many other industries. This experience exposed him to the advantages and shortcomings of most every type of filtration system and emissions control devices.

AFS Submits Dozens of Questions to OSHA on the Crystalline Silica Rulemaking

In January 2018, AFS submitted 70 questions to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to clarify various aspects of the Agency’s final crystalline silica rulemaking which is slated to go into effect for general industry on June 23, 2018. AFS, in conjunction with the society's safety and health committee, drafted questions related to key components of the rulemaking involving, but not limited to sweeping, compressed air, regulated areas, exposure assessments, respiratory protection/air supplied hoods, engineering controls, and written control exposure plans.

OSHA staff is in the process of reviewing these questions, and AFS plans to have an initial meeting at the end of February. AFS is continuing to work with these federal officials to make improvements to the rule and how it is enforced to achieve the meaningful safety and health improvements. The goal is for OSHA to incorporate the questions into a final set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) which would provide guidance to employers and employees regarding the interpretation of various provisions of the rule and how OSHA intends to enforce certain requirements of the standard. The final FAQs would ultimately be incorporated into an enforcement directive prepared by the agency for the rule, as it applies to general industry.

For additional information on OSHA’s silica rule, AFS has created a Crystalline Silica Resource Page that contains a host of information on the rulemaking and steps foundries need to take to come into compliance. AFS will be hosting monthly webinars starting in March to provide more detailed information on implementation.

Our February meeting with  Frank Granatino from Goering & Granatino, P.A. Certified Public Accountants was so interesting!  He gave us some great insight into changes in the new tax laws.  We’ve put his presentation out on the Mokan Chapter website; feel free to check it out at  www.afs-mokan.org.   I’m sure Frank would be happy to help you get the most of your tax dollars!

Get your questions ready and meet us at Misty’s on the 15th!  Please RSVP to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  We’d love to know you are coming!
